Location and how to get there
Quan Ba is situated on the famous
National Highway 4C, also known as the "
Happiness Road" of Ha Giang. To get there from Hanoi, most travelers take an overnight bus to Ha Giang City, which is a 6-to-8-hour journey. From there, you can catch a local bus or rent a motorbike to reach Quan Ba and begin the famous "Ha Giang Loop". Renting a motorbike typically costs between 150,000 to 180,000 VND per day (about $6-7 USD).
History and legends
The culture and history of Quan Ba are deeply linked to the various ethnic minorities living there, such as the Hmong, the Dao and the Tay.
The region is often confused with the "Autonomous Region of Cats", a mistranslation of the name "Mèo" that the French used to designate the Hmong ethnic group in colonial times. In fact, the area was originally an isolated region called "H'mong Autonomous Region" and included the districts of Quan Ba, Meo Vac, Yen Minh and Dong Van.
The most famous legend of Quan Ba is that of the "Quan Ba Twin Mountains". The story tells of a Hmong man and a fairy who fell in love and had a son. Furious, the Jade Emperor ordered the fairy to return to the heavens. Before she left, she left her breasts on Earth to nourish her child, which then transformed into the two perfectly symmetrical mountains we see today, symbolizing the beauty and generosity of nature.
