Suối Thầu Meadow, the Swiss Prairie of Northern Vietnam
Xin Man : location and when to go
Get ready for an adventure to reach this little slice of paradise, located about 150 km southwest of Hà Giang city. Xin Mân borders China, and also shares boundaries with Lào Cai province to the west (near Bắc Hà) and Hoàng Su Phì to the east.
To get there, you first need to reach Hà Giang from Hanoi, usually via an overnight bus trip of around six to nine hours. From there, the real expedition to the main town, Cốc Pài, begins. The approach is winding, and if you’re an experienced rider, a motorbike is the most thrilling way to tackle the roads. They offer absolutely incredible views of the terraced rice fields and misty mountains, even if the going is sometimes tough. If you prefer, local buses are also available from Hà Giang or Bắc Hà, but be prepared for a potentially bumpy ride.
To capture the magic of the golden rice fields, aim for Autumn, from September to December. This period also coincides with the splendid season of buckwheat flowers.

Nature and culture: what to see and do
Xin Mân is the perfect playground for nature lovers and those seeking local cultural immersion.
Start by losing yourself among the terraced rice fields. Although less famous than those in Hoàng Su Phì, they are no less spectacular, especially when they turn golden in the autumn. For a view with a real wow factor, be sure to climb up to the Suối Thầu Meadow, nicknamed the "Swiss prairie of Hà Giang." It’s a perfect spot at 1,200 meters above sea level for memorable photos. For hikers, Chiêu Lầu Thi peak is a prized gem for its trekking trails, spectacular views, and ethereal wisps of clouds.

Wild nature also offers the majestic Horsetail Waterfall (Thác bạc đuôi ngựa) and classified sites to explore, such as the mysterious Nâm Dân Ancient Stones. Continue the journey on the wild axis of the Fairy Waterfall (Thác Tiên) and the Wind Pass (Đèo Gió). And after all that effort, imagine relaxing in the Quang Nguyên Hot Springs!
But the soul of Xin Mân truly reveals itself at the Sunday Market in Cốc Pài. This vibrant spot is more than just a place for trading goods; it’s a genuine cultural celebration. Minority ethnic groups like the H’mong and Nùng gather here to share news and warm moments, proudly wearing their colourful traditional costumes.
Whether you're hunting for hidden waterfalls or seeking immersion through a local homestay, Xin Mân is a promise of authenticity.

Local flavors: the taste of the mountains
The cuisine here is a journey in itself, a delicious reflection of the mountain’s cultural richness, where everything is incredibly fresh. Treat yourself at the small restaurants and markets, which overflow with typical Northern dishes seasoned with the flavors of the local ethnic groups.
You absolutely can’t miss the famous smoked buffalo meat (thịt trâu gác bếp), a local delicacy, or the surprising Sour Phở (Phở chua), a truly refreshing regional variant. Also try the stews made with mountain black pig or goat, and don't forget the sticky rice cooked directly in bamboo tubes. All of this is ideally paired with the essential local corn wine, often offered as a sign of sincere hospitality.
